Palestinian volunteers in Rafah were using firewood on Monday to cook food for residents in Gaza who were displaced from their homes amid the Israel-Hamas war.
With the war in its second month, those who managed to flee Israel’s ground invasion in northern Gaza were encountering scarcity of food in the south.
Over 1.5 million people in Gaza are estimated to be internally displaced, including about 778,000 IDPs who are staying in at least 154 UNRWA shelters.
Volunteers have said they can't cope with the numbers of people who need humanitarian assistance.
Since the start of the war, several hundred trucks of aid has entered Gaza through the southern Rafah crossing, but aid organisations say that’s a drop in the ocean of need.
For most people, each day has become a drudging cycle of searching for bread and water and waiting in lines.
Gaza City, the largest urban area in the territory, is the focus of Israel’s campaign to crush Hamas following the militant group's deadly Oct. 7 incursion into southern Israel that set off the war.
More than two-thirds of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million have fled their homes since the war began.
