In retaliation to Ukraine’s alleged and fatal attack in Belgorod on Saturday, Russia launched a drone and missile strike on Kharkiv overnight, just hours later, injuring at least 28 people.
Residential buildings, hotels and medical facilities were hit in the attack, as well as the former Kharkiv Palace Hotel, which was housing military commanders and "foreign mercenaries" temporarily.
In a statement, Russia said it also hit the headquarters of the Ukrainian Security Service for the Kharkiv region.
In “response to” Ukraine’s alleged responsibility behind killing 18 in Belgorod, Russia “struck decision-making centers and military facilities in the city of Kharkiv, which were used by the criminal Kyiv regime,” according to Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson, Igor Konashenkov.
“This is our new year,” Kharkiv resident Iryna Nikitina said on Sunday, in tears, as she stood among the rubble of damaged buildings.
Russia’s attack on Kharkiv marks the latest in a string of airstrikes on Ukrainian cities that began on Friday — what many are calling their biggest wave of aerial bombardment since the beginning of the war in February 2022. So far, at least 31 Ukrainians have died as a result of the air assault.
