STORYLINE:
Large smoke plumes were seen rising above the Gaza Strip on Friday morning as clashes between Hamas militants and the Israeli military intensified around Gaza City.
The Palestinian Health Ministry says the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has risen to 10,818.
In its latest update Thursday, the ministry said the figure includes 4,412 children and 2,198 women.
The vast majority have been killed in Israeli airstrikes that have pounded the enclave following Hamas’ assault on Israel.
Another 2,650 people have been reported missing and may be trapped or dead under the rubble.
More than two-thirds of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million have fled their homes since the war began, with hundreds of thousands heeding Israeli orders to flee to the southern part of the enclave.
An additional 26,905 Palestinians in Gaza have been injured.
More than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, primarily in the initial Hamas attack on Oct. 7.
About 240 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group.
The war, now in its second month, was triggered by the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel.
