Rishi Sunak has fuelled his diplomatic row with Greece by accusing the country’s prime minister of “grandstanding” over the Elgin Marbles.
Sunak was accused by Sir Keir Starmer of having the “reverse Midas touch” after he cancelled a planned meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis over the sculptures taken from the Parthenon in the 19th century. Mitsotakis had said in an interview on Sunday that he wanted the marbles returned to Athens. Some Greek ministers accused Sunak of disrespecting the Greek people.
Defending himself at prime minister’s questions, Sunak said: “It was clear that the purpose of the meeting was not to discuss substantive issues for the future, but rather to grandstand and relitigate issues of the past.”
