Cyclone Michaung has left a devastating toll, claiming at least 17 lives—16 in Chennai and its adjacent districts and a child in Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone inflicted widespread damage on thousands of acres of standing crops in Andhra, prompting the evacuation of around 10,000 people from coastal regions. On December 6, the capital of Tamil Nadu remained waterlogged, with over 61,000 seeking refuge in government-run shelters. Making landfall on the Andhra coast near Bapatla on December 5, accompanied by intense rain and wind speeds of up to 100 kmph, Michaung's impact brought back haunting memories of the December 2015 Chennai floods. Experts attribute the heavy rainfall to the storm's proximity, hovering just 90 km east of Chennai, causing prolonged and intense downpours.
