The reason why Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips now wants a transfer is because he wants to play regularly ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany, according to a report by ESPN. Phillips, who is valued at £42million, has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, who are interested in signing him on loan in January.
However, Newcastle may not be able to offer Phillips the guarantee of playing time that he seeks, as they have a lot of competition in the midfield area. Howe has several options to choose from, such as Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, Joelinton and Joe Willock, who are all performing well for the Magpies.
Phillips has been a fringe player at Man City this season, making only four appearances in all competitions. He is still a regular in the England squad, but he may lose his place if he does not get more minutes on the pitch. Phillips signed for Man City from Leeds United in 2022 for £42million, but he has not been able to establish himself as a starter under Pep Guardiola.
Phillips will have to decide whether to stay at Man City and fight for his place, or to join another club where he can play more often and boost his chances of featuring for England in Euro 2024. Newcastle are keen to bring him in, but they may not be able to meet his demands.
